Tanggal 10 November ditetapkan oleh Presiden Soekarno sebagai hari Nasional pada tahun 1959. Hal ini dilakukan sebagai bentuk penghargaan atas jasa dan pengorbanan para pahlawan dan pejuang untuk mengusir penjajah. Di tahun 1945 setelah proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia, di Surabaya terjadi pertempuran besar antara rakyat Indonesia dan pasukan Inggris. Pertempuran ini memuncak pada tanggal 30 Oktober 1945, yaitu saat terbunuhnya Brigadir Jenderal Mallaby yang merupakan pimpinan tentara Inggris. Kematian ini membuat pihak Inggris marah terhadap pihak Indonesia dan mengeluarkan ultimatum yang meminta pihak Indonesia menyerahkan persenjataan dan menghentikan perlawanan pada tentara Inggris. Namun ultimatum tersebut tidak dilakukan oleh rakyat Indonesia, sehingga terjadilah pertempuran hebat di Surabaya. Banyak pejuang dan rakyat yang gugur menjadi korban, oleh karena itu Kota Surabaya dikenang sebagai Kota Pahlawan dan 10 November diperingati sebagai Hari Pahlawan.
Untuk memperingati Hari Pahlawan ini, SD Ta’miriyah mengadakan lomba untuk mengobarkan semangat pemuda pada siswa siswi. Adapun lombanya yaitu lomba membaca teks Pancasila (kelas 1), Proklamasi (kelas 2), Sumpah Pemuda (kelas 3), Pembukaan UUD 1945 (kelas 4), puisi (kelas 5) , dan pidato kebangsaan (kelas 6). Para siswa mengikuti lomba dengan antusias dan khidmat. Cara membaca para siswa sangat beragam, ada yang membaca dengan memperhatikan intonasi dan penghayatan namun ada juga yang dibaca intonasi datar atau biasa. Dengan adanya lomba ini, diharapkan pengetahuan siswa mengenai teks bersejarah bertambah dan lebih menghargai jasa para pahlawan.
